Northern Powergrid / Northumberland Wind Farms

Idec Technical Services were commissioned to provide connections to new Windfarms at Middlemoor, Lynemouth and Wandylaw.

To facilitate the connection of Middlemoor and Wandylaw Windfarms substations, new protection equipment is required at Blyth, Linton, Denwick, Warkworth, Middlemoor and Lynemouth Windfarm substations. To facilitate the connection of Lynemouth Windfarm substation, new protection equipment is required at Blyth, Linton, Alcan and Lynemouth Windfarm substations.

We undertook the detailed design of protection schemes based on clients outline protection scheme specification, production of schematic and wiring diagrams for the protection and control panels and the production of wiring diagrams for panel manufacture.

Production of protection relay control logic schemes to provide correct protection and control circuit functionality together with the primary plant control, alarms and indication.

The protection panels were equipped, wired and function tested within the Idec workshops to the design detailed above in compliance with our quality assurance plan and associated documentation.

Factory Acceptance testing of all panels was undertaken at our manufacturing facility.

The Clients Representative also witnessed testing of typical protection relay configuration.

On completion a full set of operation and maintenance manuals were supplied.


Wadlow, Roos and Grange 33kV wind farm connections

Idec were contracted by RES to deliver switchgear and protection/control solutions for the on site 33kV substations at each location. Interfacing with three DNOs, the installations comprised 33kV incomer, auxiliary transformer and windfarm array feeders.

Idec were responsible for the complete design, supply, installation, testing (including utility witness testing) and commissioning of the windfarm protection, control (replacement PLC and SCADA) and battery charger systems, required interconnecting LV, control and signalling cabling, including provision of all documentation, relay settings, test certificates and drawings.

Idec carried out the design for and supplied the 33kV GIS switchgear, protection & control panels and carried out full on site installation and commissioning of the equipment together with the auxiliary transformers and pre-insertion resistors.

All three projects were completed early against challenging programmes.
