High Voltage Protection Systems

ABB / Northern Powergrid / Tynemouth - 132kV GIS Sub Station Protection Design and Build

high voltage case study

Idec Technical Serices designed and built the protection for the Double Busbar 132kV GIS Brownfield Site.

Adjacent to the existing 132kV AIS.

As with this and FOUR previous 132kV Double Busbar Sub Stations designed over the past four years the protection was a mix of Differential, Distance or HSOC with a variety of intertripping. The inertripping incorporated: Pilot Wire, VF and X21 (Fibre) mediums.

The Control / Alarm / Status and Analogues etc were achieved using a Bay Controller and DNP3.0 Communications to a mixture of different RTU's using a mix of Alstom and Siemens Relays. All PSL and Logic Designed by Idec, pre-tested on a purpose built test rig to simulate all the various I/O. The Remote Ends were also modified, installed and tested by Idec.
